PHOSPHORESCENCE

This track name was inspired by a 8-9hr full moon night surf session held by Dave Rastovich, Sol Carroll & Oj Newcomb at the Pass, Byron Bay. The only 3 (humans) out in the water. (We are sure there were plenty of other sea creatures !)

It was a perfect cloudless brisk Autumn evening with a 2-3ft ESE evenly pulsed swell, clean lines with the SE wind & a healthy sand bank from the Spring & Summer winds & consistent swells. A particularly good year in the Bay actually.

What made it even more epic was the full moon rising perfectly for a midnight to 6am shine down the face of the wave. Not only that but the ever present Phosphorescence sparking off the boards & arms as we paddled & surfed like the ever expanding cosmos above us. It was truly a mind blowing experience..

It was actually a classic feeling being surfed out as the early bird surfers arrived at 5am..

We went back the next night at around 12 midnight only to arrive to a storm in full force.. We still went out with the waves a little bumpier & the clouds making the dark water a little more open to large dark creature thoughts !! it happened to clear up a few hours later.. We were also joined this day by 'Lady Butterfly' Lauren Hill who actually features in the Liquid film from this actual session from the handy work of DR & his mini cam at dawn....

Phosphorescence is a specific type of photoluminescence related to fluorescence. Unlike fluorescence, a phosphorescent material does not immediately re-emit the radiation it absorbs. The slower time scales of the re-emission are associated with "forbidden" energy state transitions in quantum mechanics. As these transitions occur less often in certain materials, absorbed radiation may be re-emitted at a lower intensity for up to several hours.

The study of phosphorescent materials led to the discovery of radioactivity in 1896.
